Resonate Artist Of The Week : Nathan Somevi
We’re back this week with another exceptional example of all that is great about Scotland’s music scene at the moment. The debut EP from Charlie Hunter extraordinaire Nathan Somevi.
A sensational four-track celebration of jazz, soul and modernity captures Nathan’s unquestionable smooth songwriting and execution on the hybrid guitar/bass. Featuring the sublime tenor saxophone tones of Mateusz Sobieski and Niall Ford on drums, the trio deliver a quartet of jazz classic influenced tracks. Drawing parallels to the likes of Herbie Hancock & Sonny Rollins.
For us there is not a dub moment in this EP. Track after track is simply perfection following perfection. Title track ‘Can’t Be Done’ is riddled in toe-tapping staccato rhythmic stabs - counteracted with smooth, long exhaling downtempo moments. ‘Unsettled’ portrays more funk driven bass lines, possibly even a tiny bit of latin inspiration - paired with some sumptuous strings section providing more sonic depth.
Something that is present in all tracks, is that wondrous willingness to explore from Nathan - phrasing, sequences, chord structures and improvisation all add this EP’s appeal.
