Q&A: The Too Late

We caught up with The Too Late to discuss their King Tuts debut, explore their songwriting process and they also tease whats to come at their upcoming live dates later this year. Check out their Q&A below.

Glasgow has such a vibrant and diverse music scene. How has the city shaped The Too Late's signature sound?

We have taken a lot of influence from famous Glasgow bands when it comes to the creative process, mostly coming from our parents. One thing that sticks out about the Glasgow music scene is that wherever you go to see a gig in the city theres such a variety of talented artists, and thats so exciting. So we are trying to stand out with a sound that cant be compared to many other bands.

When you're not making music, where do you like to hang out in Glasgow? Any hidden gems that inspire your creativity?

We love to hang out in Glasgow's west end in a proper local pub. Somewhere with cheap pints and some live music, nothing fancy. I wouldn’t say as a band that this inspires us in the writing process as we seem to come up with our songs in a dark room late at night, and somehow they come out upbeat

If you could describe The Too Late in the form of a lyric from one of your songs, which lyric would it be and why?

“I wanna feel so young, oh I wanna dance, i wanna dance the night away with you” We want people to listen to our music and feel good. Whether that makes you feel young again, feel like you want to dance or scream along. We want to make people feel happy.

Congrats on your recent gig at King Tuts! King Tut’s is synonymous with launching the careers of many bands. How did it feel stepping onto that stage, knowing the legacy of the venue?

It was a dream come true for us. We only started gigging as a band last year and to say we’ve ticked off King Tut’s is unbelievable and were so grateful for the opportunity. One for the bucket list for sure!!

How do you collaborate during the creative process? Do you each bring different strengths to the table when writing?

We all have different strengths in the creative process which is a really successful dynamic. Usually Ryan (Lead Singer) will come up with a demo and along with Connor (Lead Guitarist) and they'll start working on it.

We’ll then pass it onto Matthew (Keys) and Donal (Drums & MD) to see if they have anything to add which they always do. Having a diverse music taste throughout definitely helps add little unforeseen elements to bring it to life. We all have a great relationship with each other so we can be honest if we dont like certain things. I think that has been very important to our sound.

What’s next for The Too Late? New music, upcoming gigs?

We are playing Gig on the Green in Greenock on Sunday 8th September, Duns Beer and Food Festival Saturday 14th September then followed by a gig at SWG3 Warehouse as part of the Gathering lineup on Saturday 5th October.

It’s a busy period for us and we’re really excited. We will also be releasing a new song in October. Keep your eyes out….
