Q&A: Hana Jane
Scottish singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Hana Jane is situated just outside of Glasgow in Dumbarton. Hana Jane has a background in music, having worked her way up from busking as a teenager to headlining at the Hug & Pint, as well as performing on iconic stages in Glasgow such as King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut and Saint Luke’s in 2023. In 2024 so far, Hana has returned to the studio to continue creating music and released her third song, ‘Free’ and has just announced a support slot at the King Tuts for Summer Nights on the 8th August.
We spoke to Hana about her latest single, dream collaborations, and advice for aspiring musicians in the Scottish music industry.
Your latest single 'Free' tells the story of a toxic relationship you experienced, was this a difficult or cathartic song to write and share with the world?
Well, this song is 6 years old. It was difficult at the time to write because everything was still raw however, to release it now, it didn’t feel difficult. It actually felt like the right time for the song to be released. Releasing the song now is to bring courage and a voice to any listeners who may be going through similar experiences.
You have just announced your support slot at King Tut's on the 8th August supporting Abbie Gordon, how exciting is that!? What would be your dream support slot to be offered, what artist and venue?
Yes!!! I’m absolutely delighted to be asked back to King Tuts, it’s some lineup and honoured to be on the bill. That is such a tough question, I’m not sure I can only give one answer! If she was still with us Amy Winehouse hands down, but if I pick someone from today it would be Raye and in the Royal Albert Hall.
Tell us your three desert island albums.
That is a tough question but Renaissance by Beyoncé when I need to cheer myself up and have a dance around the island. Back to Black by Amy Winehouse when I want to be in my feels. And lastly, a Queens greatest hits album because I could listen to that on repeat daily.
If you could collaborate with anyone on future music, who would it be?
Ahhh so many but I think to suit my music, I’d love to write with Adele or Raye. But also I would love to throw a curveball and do a dance track with Calvin Harris.
You started performing as a busker and released your debut single only last year, what advice would you give your younger self starting to navigate the music industry in Scotland?
The first thing that pops into my head is stop caring about what people think. You only get one life and there’s no point holding off or doubting yourself because you’re scared of what people will think of you, you have a dream, go get it.
And finally, what can we expect to see from Hana Jane throughout the rest of 2024?
I have been back in the studio, so new music will be coming soon. Lots more gigs and I want to lock myself away so I can focus on writing a bunch of new music to pull together for a debut EP!
