Resonate Artist of the Week: Kryptik
Scottish HipHop staple, Kryptik, is this weeks Resonate Artist of the Week. In 2019 he was nominated for a SAMA and has had regular plays on BBC Introducing. Earlier this year, he made national press with a track called ‘Ayahuasca’, detailing his trip into the Costa Rican mountains with a shaman. Rubbing shoulders with international names, such as RA The Ruggedman, Fly Anakin, Marlowe, Pan Amsterdam & Damu the Fudgemonk, he is certainly making a name for himself.
Kryptik has built his own studio and founded Dental Rekords; providing a platform to steer other Scottish artists across the bridges he’d built. His ‘Collective Thoughts’ album raised awareness for mental health, and he done several interviews and even a small documentary on addiction, misplaced anger and music therapy. All profits of this album were donated to Sunny Govan Community Radio to assist them during the pandemic.
Pairing up with 2-time UK DMC Finalist, DJ Pandamonium, for his recent single filled with soulful summer sounds. The track is called ‘Step Up’ and does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s all about maintaining a positive attitude while everything else is falling apart. Using his Kryptik methods, the SAMA Award Nominee has somehow managed to make a very personal piece relatable.
Despite the sincere sentiment, the classic BoomBap beat keeps it vibrant and uplifting. The skippy slicing of the string sample, combined with the descending bass and bouncy break, make for a wholesome sound, which has already seen support from BBC Introducing Scotland.
Shot next to a lazy little loch, (with a rare appearance of the ever elusive Scottish sun), the stunning scenery provides the perfect backdrop to accompany the overall feel of the track. Visuals handled by local battle rap veteran, Andrew MacKenzie.
