‘Hoy’ is a song that pays tribute to both the power of intimacy and the incredible landscape of its namesake island. With layers upon layers of dreamy vocals, ambient synthesisers and sparkly guitars, it creates a powerful soundscape that captures both the whimsical and profound nature of intimacy; there is a magic to it in all its reverb and sparkle but Hoy is still purposefully rough around the edges. Lyrically it falls somewhere between KT Tunstall and Soccer Mommy. There’s an effortlessness and sincerity which does not go unnoticed - so bravo to Alannah.
The song has been five years in the making from writing to recording on to release, going through many drafts before reaching its final stage. Hoy is grown from the idea of the parallels seen between Alannah and her partner and how the beautiful hills, valleys, coves and cliffs on the island had been weathered and sculpted by the wind, the sea and the passage of time into something incredible.
Hoy is out this Friday and features Matthew Alexander on both acoustic and electric guitar, Robbie Nicol on drum-kit and Fraser Dunn on bass guitar. Mixed and mastered by Chris Kenny of 88K Productions.
