Resonate Artist of the Week: Ruth Gillies
Comforting and enchanting - that's what new pop starlet Ruth Gilles delivers on her debut ‘Wake Me Up Slowly’. Perfectly balanced in amongst the likes of Maggie Rodgers, Taylor Swift and Carole King - it portrays an overwhelming sensation of quality wholesome songwriting.
Originally from the Scottish Highlands, Ruth now calls Edinburgh home. She recorded ‘Wake Me Up Slowly’ with Alasdair Kelly and Sam Cracknell in a studio in Leith. Perhaps unintentionally this track captures some Leith seaside magic - lofi, shoegaze synths and hollowed drums that make for soothing listening. Ruth’s contemporary songwriting depicts the surreal, dream like state in the early moments of a blooming romance.
“The track is about a memory with a past love and those dream like moments of falling for someone. I remember an evening that genuinely felt so dream-like and it became a moment I would often reflect on. I had known for years I wanted to write a song about that but nothing seemed to honour it until the idea for ‘wake me up slowly’ came to mind. I wanted to encapsulate the magic of making special memories like that and convey the desperation to relive those moments regardless of being dreams or reality.” - Ruth Gilles
