Resonate Artist Of The Week: Vagrant Real Estate
Introducing Aberdeen based producer and DJ Vagrant Real Estate. With a new album - SWEETHEARTGRIPS set to drop this Friday, this sophomore instrumental hip hop album is a breath of fresh air drawing influence from the jazz and blues era.
Having already receiving support from BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway who spun album track ‘Lifeless / Like This’, on last weeks show, Vagrant Real Estate’s impressive hip hop, r&b and grime sets him in good stead for this, his second album. His first solo album “As Much As I Used To” was released in December 2017, and enjoyed support from the likes of BBC Introducing Scotland, BBC Radio 1Xtra, Sphere of Hip-Hop and several other blogs and playlists.
As a producer he has worked with artists such as Nolay, Remtrex, Blay Vision, Cally and Ransom FA, and also branched out worldwide by laying down beats for international MCs such as Florida’s Eyesayge and Reno KOQ from Brooklyn.
This album certainly tests the boundaries with naturalistic, worldly sounds and a delicacy which can so often be missing in hip hop music. Vagrant Real Estate’s penchant for jazz and blues music bring an unprecedented refinement - with tracks like Troublesome ‘93 intricate guitar riffs reminiscent of Khurangbin. Tracks like ‘Yours’ will undoubtably make your head bob, toes tap and body groove - bringing some gospel influences with a fun uplifting organ and powerful female led vocals. The entirety of the production, arrangement and artwork has been handled by Vagrant Real Estate himself, with three guest appearances dropping in as interludes. Skirmish of acclaimed UK rap group Rhyme Asylum makes an appearance, as well as the Birmingham Grime artist Mayday and Reno KOQ of Queens, New York.
Make sure you check out the album when it drops this Friday 25th October! In the meantime, follow @vagrantrealestate on all the usual platforms!
